Old Iron Town Ghost Town – Utah

Located about 20 minutes west of Cedar City, Utah, Old Irontown is a former iron factory that is now mostly in ruins. An easy trail loops around the ruins of Old Iron Town, with storyboards explaining the area’s history. If you enjoy visiting ghost towns and former mining camps, you might want to check out Old Iron Town if you are in the area.

Old Iron Town Ghost Town Overview:

Cost: Free
Location: Roughly 20 minutes west of Cedar City, Utah on UT-56. Turn left on Old Iron Town Road (you will see a brown sign for this road). The road turns to gravel, and you’ll travel roughly 5 miles directly to the historic site. The site is managed by the Frontier Homestead State Park in nearby Cedar City.

The most notable feature of Old Iron Town is the charcoal kiln. You will see this right away as you enter the site. Shaped like a beehive, you are allowed to walk right up to the kiln and go inside.

After checking out the beehive-shaped kiln, you can continue along the loop trail to see the remaining ruins of Old Iron Town. The loop trail is roughly 3/4 mile long. You’ll find more placards telling you the story of Old Iron Town, and you’ll see the remains of an old house made out of rocks, and a few pieces of machinery but that’s about it. There just isn’t much left to see.

Final Thoughts – OId Irontown

Old Iron Town just isn’t that compelling. I wouldn’t make a special trip out here to see these ruins, but I suppose if you’re passing through and need a spot to stretch your legs or let your kids run around, this might be a good stop. It’s free and you’ll likely be the only people here. We were maybe here for about 15 minutes – it was on our way out to California.
