Jonathan Young Windmill: Cape Cod: Orleans, Massachusetts

Jonathan Young Windmill in Cape Cod

The Jonathan Young Windmill is located in Town Cove park off of Highway 6, which is Cape Cod’s main route and is accessible to the public. The Jonathan Young Windmill was built in 1720, but its current location is not its original location. Local lore says that like a vagabond, the Jonathan Young Windmill has moved locations several times, until it arrived here at the park.

The Jonathan Young Windmill used to grind up barley and corn, and supposedly, the windmill’s gears all work, although the windmill is primarily here for historic purposes.

Visiting the Jonathan Young Windmill

I think we maybe spent all of 5 minutes here at the park. It’s a quick stop off of Highway 6 and it’s great for pictures, as long as the paddles are on the windmill.  As you can see from my pictures, the paddles were removed when we visited. I don’t know when they put the paddles on this — for your reference, we visited in early April. My guess is that they were removed for the winter.

The park is scenic and the windmill overlooks the water providing some nice photo opportunities.

This is a quick stop along your Cape Cod road trip. Just hope that the paddles are on for your visit. Another nearby windmill is the Eastham Windmill – the paddles were on during our visit, so if you’re on Cape Cod during the offseason, you’ll want to check that windmill out too.
