Cape St. Vincent Lighthouse – Algarve, Portugal

Cape St. Vincent Lighthouse (Cabo de São Vicente) was constructed in 1846 and is notable for being located on the extreme southwestern-most point in both Portugal and on continental Europe. This lighthouse and its surrounding area is very photogenic, as it’s perched on headland cliffs and can be photographed in a number of ways. Let’s explore the Cape Saint Vincent lighthouse near Sarges, Portugal in the Algarve region of the country.

Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de Sao Vicente) Lighthouse – Location and Details

Cape St. Vincent and the lighthouse are about a 40 minute drive from the nearby city of Lagos, Portugal. You will need to have a car to get here. There is plenty of parking here and admission is free.

Cost: Free. You cannot go inside the lighthouse but you can photograph it up close near the cafe and gift shop, or from afar (my favorite compositions) from each side of the cliffs, both easily accessible from the parking lots.

Amenities: Restrooms (pay), gift shop, museum and cafe.

Time Commitment: You can take as little as 5 minutes here, snapping a photo or two of the lighthouse and be on your way, but we spent probably an hour here, as we explored the cliffs around the area, taking (what seems like) hundreds of photos, and we had espresso in the small cafe.

Visiting Cape St. Vincent and Lighthouse

The scenery here is amazing! The stunning coastline has lots of high cliffs rising straight out of the ocean – Cape St. Vincent was once described as the ‘edge of the world’ by early explorers. It definitely does feel like the edge of the world, as there’s nothing else beyond the cliffs but pure ocean!

Visitors to this area are allowed to explore all over the cliffs – just be careful – there are no guardrails and it can get extremely windy here.

The lighthouse can be photographed on both sides of the cliffs, so you can play around with various photography compositions. We visited mid-day, but I’m sure sunset here would be spectacular.

The Cape St. Vincent lighthouse is a working lighthouse, still in operation, and is said to have one of the most powerful lights in all of Europe.

This was definitely a worthwhile stop on our Portugal road trip – and if you like lighthouses and ocean scenery, you’ll definitely want to add Cape St. Vincent to your itinerary. The only downside is that if you’re traveling Portugal without a car, you may have difficulty visiting this area of the country.
