Gibbon Falls Waterfall – Yellowstone National Park

Gibbon Falls is a beautiful, 84-foot drop waterfall, located along a roadside pullout within Yellowstone National Park. This waterfall won’t take you long to view – maybe 5 minutes – so it’s definitely worth a quick stop on your journey through Yellowstone National Park. Let’s explore and review Gibbon Falls in Yellowstone National Park!

Gibbon Falls – Location and Details

Gibbon Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Yellowstone National Park, as it’s located on a roadside pullout on a heavily trafficked stretch of the Grand Loop Road, between the Madison and Norris Geyser Basin Junction.

Parking: Gibbon Falls has a large parking lot and although it’s a very busy attraction inside Yellowstone National Park, you shouldn’t have problems finding a spot, as people are coming and going constantly. Once they have their waterfall photo, they’re outta here.

Amenities: Restrooms (this is a crowded area so there’s always a long line – go elsewhere!), trash cans, and storyboard signs explaining the geology of the area.

Visiting Gibbon Falls in Yellowstone National Park

The viewing area for Gibbon Falls is pretty big. You can walk down a spacious, open paved walkway to see slightly different views of Gibbon Falls, though in my opinion, they all pretty much look the same. I walked to the end of the paved area as I wanted to be away from the majority of the crowds to setup my tripod to take a few daytime long exposure photos of the waterfall.

Viewing Gibbon Falls from any other vantage point isn’t possible. So, you’ll basically walk away with the same photos as everyone else. You won’t be able to get a photo of Gibbon Falls from the bottom of the falls, unfortunately.

For photography, you’ll want avoid Gibbon Falls in the late afternoon hours, as deep shadows start covering the waterfall – see my photo below, taken around 5pm in the afternoon:
