Miners Castle – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Michigan

Miners Castle is arguably the most famous landmark inside of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. And thankfully, this site can be easily accessed by vehicle – in fact, it’s the only area in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where you can see the cliffs by car! Let’s take a closer look at how to get to the Miners Castle Overlook in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – Location

If you’re coming from Munising, Michigan (the closest town), it’s about a 17 minute drive to the overlook. It’s a nice, relaxing, rural drive, especially in the fall, when the leaves have turned. Additionally, you will be able to see the entrance sign for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along this route (I always take photos of National Park Service site signs!)

Visiting Miners Castle Overlook at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Beginning in 2022, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore now charges a $10 entrance fee. Your America the Beautiful pass will be accepted here. Leashed pets are allowed on the trails.

Once you reach the overlook, there is plenty of parking available. You’ll find a visitor center, pavilion with some informational storyboards about the area and restrooms. During my visit in mid-October, the visitor center was closed for the season (it’s only open Memorial Day to Labor Day – very short season!)

The upper overlook is located just past the visitor center. The paved and boardwalk walkway is completely wheelchair accessible and is only 265 feet from the visitor center.

At the overlook, you’ll find an amazing view of Miners Castle and a nice view of Lake Superior. There are several informational storyboards explaining the geology of Miners Castle, plus there are coin-operated telescopes. This view is absolutely gorgeous, especially if you visit on a sunny day in the fall when the leaves have turned! The teal water against the yellow leaves, with the sandstone cliffs — ahh! So amazing!

If you want to get a closer look at Miners Castle, you can continue northeast along the trail to the lower overlook. This short, paved/boardwalk trail includes a flight of stairs, and parts of the trail can be a little steep. Once you reach the end, you’ll find another large viewing platform.

From here, you can get a close-up look at the Miners Castle formation. While it was nice seeing the rock formation up close, I thought the upper viewpoint offered a much more photogenic scene. And that’s all there is to it – there isn’t much else to do in this particular location except the two viewpoints. Nearby, however, there are a few waterfalls requiring hikes (Miners Falls and Mosquito Falls but you will need to drive to these trailheads). Miners Beach is also a short drive away. I did not have time for a hike during my trip out to Miners Castle.

Miners Castle Overlook at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – Final Thoughts

Pros

• Beautiful overlook – especially in the fall!
• National Park Service unit entrance sign along the way

Cons

• Visitor center isn’t open during the fall season, which is a time that this area really shines!
• Located in an out-of-the-way area – there’s not much else around, and you’ll likely be doubling-back to Munising, if you’re staying there.
