Minaret Vista Overlook – Mammoth Lakes, California
Just past the famous Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a beautiful scenic overlook, giving you a view of the Ritter sub-range in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and its most notable formation – the Minarets. If you’re visiting California’s Eastern Sierra or Mammoth Lakes, Minaret Vista is a quick-but-amazing scenic lookout that won’t add a whole lot of time on your trip. Here’s how to visit the Minaret Vista overlook in Mammoth Lakes, California and what to expect when you get there.
Minaret Vista Overlook – Location
The Minaret Vista overlook is located about 1.5 miles past the Mammoth Mountain Ski area – you’ll drive past the chairlifts and chalet and onto Red’s Meadow Road. If you’re coming from the town of Mammoth Lakes, it’s about 8 miles to the viewpoint.
Just before the entrance station to drive down into Red’s Meadow is the turn off for Minaret Vista at Lookout Point Road.
Beyond the entrance station is Devil’s Postpile National Monument and the hiking trail to Rainbow Falls. This area is closed to personal vehicles during most of the summer months, requiring visitors to take a shuttle bus. You can reach Minaret Vista in your own car; no shuttle bus is necessary.
There is no fee to access Minaret Vista and there is a small-ish parking lot. I’ve visited Minaret Vista a few different times, at various times during the day and never had any issues finding a parking spot. If you do run into parking issues, just be patient – people are coming and going all the time from this spot.
The road to Minaret Vista is closed during the winter due to heavy snowfall, although it can still be reached via snowmobile, snowshoes, or cross-country skis.
What are the Minarets?
The Minarets are the jagged granite spire formations on the mountains you see in the distance. This is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Eastern Sierra range. Interpretive signage at the viewpoint will point out every mountain peak and spire that you can see from the overlook.
Visiting the Minaret Vista Overlook
The overlook is quite large, with lots of room to take photos and enjoy the view. There are also some picnic tables and vault toilets – I could see this being a nice spot for a picnic. There are also a few hiking trails that start from this point, but I haven’t had a chance to explore any of them yet. Most people just come here to snap a few pictures of the overlook and be on their way.
Best time to visit and photograph Minaret Vista
I’ve visited this overlook during the middle of the day and at sunset. I found sunset to be a bit underwhelming, as the sun sets in the west, going behind the mountains, making the view quickly disappear into darkness.
Sunrise would be much better at this viewpoint, as you will get the alpenglow of the sun shining directly on the Minarets. However, if you’re a photographer visiting the Eastern Sierra region of California, sunrise is the best time to photograph nearly everything in this area! And frankly, there are better sunrise photography locations in this area than Minaret Vista, in my opinion – Mono Lake and Convict Lake, just to name a few, so if you have limited time here, I’d focus on those locations before hitting up Minaret Vista for sunrise.
Daytime isn’t bad either – there’s nothing wrong wrong with sunshine and mountains!
