Portland Breakwater “Bug” Lighthouse – Maine

This little lighthouse is probably the cutest dang lighthouse I’ve ever seen! Known as the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse – or the “Bug Lighthouse” (I like the “bug” name, personally!), this nautical structure is positioned to mark the end of the breakwater and help guide ships into the entrance of teh Portland, Maine Harbor. Let’s take a closer look at the Portland Breakwater “Bug” Lighthouse!

Quick History of the Portland Breakwater Bug Lighthouse

The lighthouse was originally built in 1855, marking the location of the end of the breakwater. Originally, this was a taller, wooden lighthouse, but was replaced in 1875 as the breakwater was extended. The design of the lighthouse is really interesting – it was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect who designed the U.S. Capitol east and west wings and the dome.

The lighthouse still functions today. Visitors can get up close to the lighthouse but tours are not available.
