Superior Entry Lighthouse at Wisconsin Point
The Duluth, Minnesota / North Shore area has lots of lighthouses that dot Lake Superior, but there’s one lighthouse over on the Wisconsin side that’s often overlooked by tourists – the Superior Entry Lighthouse at Wisconsin Point. So if you’re looking for something to do near Duluth, Minnesota that’s off-the-beaten track (and you love lighthouses!), you might want to consider driving out to see the Superior Entry Lighthouse over at Wisconsin Point. Superior Entry Lighthouse – Location
Getting here from Duluth is a bit of a drive, though on a map, it doesn’t look far. It will take you roughly 30 minutes to drive here from Duluth.
To get here, you’ll want to look up the Superior Entry Observation Area and put that in your GPS, as that’s where you’ll park to view the lighthouse. When we visited, we were the only ones here — this place is not well-known to tourists, so if you’re looking for some solitude along the shoreline of Lake Superior, this is a great spot. In addition to the lighthouse, you’ll find sandy beaches and great views of the lake. If you want, you can swim at these beaches, but Lake Superior is ALWAYS cold, even in the heat of summer!
The drive out to the lighthouse from Duluth isn’t very interesting and as you get closer, the paved road narrows down to one lane and is riddled with potholes (at least when we were there!).
Visiting the Superior Entry Lighthouse
Rocks make up the breakwater leading to the lighthouse. We visited on a windy, chilly fall day and had no desire to walk out there (plus it looked dangerous with the conditions on Lake Superior). So if you want to get a closer look at the Superior Entry Lighthouse, you’ll have to determine for yourself if conditions are safe to walk the rocks out to the lighthouse. Personally, I wouldn’t walk out there even on a calm day – as you’ll see from my photos, the boulders are uneven and you’ll need to be sure-footed and wear sturdy footwear.
This is a functioning lighthouse that is owned by the US Coast Guard and there are no tours available; you can only view Superior Entry Lighthouse from the outside.

One thing to note: there is a lot of graffiti on the boulders out to the lighthouse. My photos are all carefully composed and don’t show any graffiti, but trust me, it’s there. I thought this was pretty disappointing to see so many of the rocks here ‘tagged’. This area is known for being a local ‘party spot’ at night.

And that’s pretty much it – it won’t take you long to ‘see’ the lighthouse, it’ll just take you a while to get out here. I definitely recommend visiting Superior Entry Lighthouse in Wisconsin if you like lighthouse ‘bagging’ like I do. Otherwise, if you just want to get away from all the mobs of tourists in Duluth, this is an excellent spot to find peace and quiet.
