Location:
Undine Falls is located in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, near the town of Gardiner, between Mammoth Hot Springs and Lamar Valley, on a pull-out right off the Grand Loop Road. If you’re coming from the Mammoth area, it’s about a 8-10 minute drive or so.
Stats: Undine Falls is a three-tiered waterfall with a 60 foot drop into Lava Creek.
Time Commitment: 5 minutes – Undine Falls waterfall is simply a roadside pullout where you can snap a photo and be on your merry way.
Visiting Undine Falls in Yellowstone
The northern area of Yellowstone, where Undine Falls is located, is a bit less crowded than the rest of the park. The pullout for the waterfall is quite large with plenty of parking. For a while, I was the only person at this overlook. I spent a little extra time here, taking “regular” photos of this waterfall as well as long exposure photos with my tripod, but for most people, 5 minutes will suffice.
I feel like this waterfall is very overlooked. Combined with the fact that it’s located in the less-visited Northern area of Yellowstone, combined with the pullout being not well-marked, a lot of people just don’t know about Undine Falls. Other roadside pullout waterfalls in the park, like Gibbon Falls, Lewis Falls and Keplar Cascades, are always extremely busy. IMO, Undine Falls is just as good and very underrated!
Because it’s located on the northern area of the park, Undine Falls can be seen via your personal car in winter, as the road is open year round. I bet this waterfall looks gorgeous when it’s frozen and surrounded by snow!
If you’re interested in hiking, you can get closer to Undine Falls via the Lava Creek Trail, but it’s an 8 mile hike. Additionally, the Wraith Falls trailhead is just down the road. I haven’t done either one of these hikes.
