Point Wilson Lighthouse – Port Townsend, Washington
Located on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, Point Wilson Lighthouse was built in 1913 (the original was built in 1879) and marks the entrance to the Puget Sound. This is a “sister” lighthouse to Admiralty Head Lighthouse, which is located right across the sound. Let’s explore and review visiting the Point Wilson Lighthouse in Washington State!
Point Wilson Lighthouse – Location and Details
Location:
Point Wilson Lighthouse is located within Fort Worden State Park, which is on the northeastern end of the Olympic Peninsula. It’s a convenient stop of you’ve just disembarked from the Port Townsend Ferry.

Recently, the Marine Documentation Society started allowing overnight stays in the lighthouse keeper’s building. You can read more about it here. (Note: You can’t stay in the actual lighthouse; this is the keeper’s building). You can find nearby lodging in Port Townsend or Sequim. When my sister and I visited, we stayed in Sequim.
Visiting the Point Wilson Lighthouse
There is a parking lot near the lighthouse – plenty of spots are available. You will need to make a short walk through a sandy trail to get closer to the lighthouse.
The interior of the lighthouse is closed to the public, so you can’t go inside. Plus, the immediate area surrounding the lighthouse is gated off – so your photography compositions will be limited.
Other than snapping some photos of the lighthouse, there isn’t much to do in this particular area of the Fort Wordon State Park. The other areas of the park looked really interesting, as its name suggests, there is a large fort to explore. However, we were hungry and wanted dinner, so we just saw the lighthouse and left. Maybe next time!
Point Wilson Lighthouse – Final Thoughts
This is a nice looking lighthouse with some beautiful ocean scenery, but I thought admission was on the high side. I realize that this is in a state park and many people here are parking their asses here for the day, but if you just want to snap a few photos of the lighthouse, $10 is awfully steep.
